How do we do it?

Pictured above, the sustainable greenhouse units are along the left and distant top right, also pictured are the large translucent partitioning tarps that segment up the space.
If you are interested in obtaining one of the spaces left, just fill out the following Application and remember to read this letter To The Artists.

Community Sustainability
Milton Facility grows through its members. It is you who are working and creating in this space, and we want you to have a sense of ownership. Each of you will be asked to be considerate of others in the community and to be aware of how resources are used. The benefits will be a flourishing social culture and a cost-efficient, comfortable space.

Only Two Hundred Dollars?!
I know, it sounds ridiculously cheap, but we have commitment to keeping the place affordable which also keeps us busy coming up with creative, low-cost, sustainable solutions to running the space. We also want everyone to know where that money is going, so an open and transparent fiscal record is available for you to see. This keeps us accountable, and keeps everyone conscious when using our precious resources.

How Do You Heat The Space?
Warehouses pose a difficult problem when it comes to heating and cooling. It tends to be noisy, inefficient, and wasteful. In tackling this particular problem we came up with a solution based on the idea of greenhouses. Each 500sqft space will have a 10x10x10ft room in its foot print that works like a small greenhouse. It is both resistant to air leaks and translucent, this way it is simple and affordable to heat/cool. It will also allow the natural light (from out skylights) to shine through and illuminate your private quarters. These smaller spaces only need to be heated/cooled when someone is using that particular space and the size makes it easy to quickly modify temperatures. All things combined, it significantly reduces waste and gives you a convenient comfortable space to focus on your work.

Do I Have To Pay Extra For Utilities?
No. In addition to the heating and cooling we are figuring out how to incorporate things such as automatic sensors, solar lighting, and signage to raise awareness of and reduce utility costs. Water utilities for the bathroom and sink will be available. Electricity will be hooked up since solar may not be a viable solution to run all electronic appliances such are computers or other personal devices and tools.

How Safe Is My Stuff, How Safe Am I?
Each renter will have their "greenhouse" to keep their things privately stored away, but we encourage you to get a locker or cabinet if you are storing expensive items such as computers or cameras, or just bring home things that you highly value. We should be able to trust one another in the community, but it is good to be proactive about keeping your personal property safe. The building itself is surrounded by an ominous barbed wire fence (it also encompasses the parking lot). There will be locks on the outside gate as well as all entrance doors. Additional security measures will be added as deemed necessary and as always use common sense.

To The Artists,
I, like you, seek to explore the world and understand it better with each new moment. This can be a difficult endeavor for a person, as it requires the ability to step outside the predictable into the unknown. Perhaps you find this as exciting as I do, and that may be the reason we continue such behavior. You have probably found yourself alone at points in your explorations as this is a common occurrence when stepping outside the realm of "normal" behavior. These moments of lone solitude though are incredible for the process of introspective thought and the incubation of new ideas, and should not be considered a waste.

I hope you too have discovered the value of interaction with community and familiar environments. This could be a deep stimulating conversation, or simply the comfort of a predictable space where you can enjoy coffee and a cigarette in good company. You have probably also discovered the value of personal space. A comfortable place where you are able to do your work completely focused, or to relax in private. These are all very important parts of the creative process.

So, I encourage you to explore the unfamiliar world out there, but know that when you need to regroup with like minded individuals or be alone in a predictable space, you now have that available to you here at Milton Facility. Certain rules will be put in place to build such an environment, each person within the community will be expected to know and observe these rules. Consider this carefully before you decide to join the community because we only want you here if you want to be here.

I am excited to bring everyone together with a clear vision for this place, but know that this will always be your community as long as you are here, know that your perspective and opinions are highly valued. At certain critical crossroads I will not hesitate to ask for your ideas and your help. So, if this sounds like something that you want to be apart of, I am happy to have you here, and I look forward to the exciting possibilities ahead.
